OK Computer Radiohead Thom Yorke tour

News for April 23, 1998

Well the US tour is over and done with. Don’t expect anymore tour dates from them. They are scheduled to play at the third annual Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington DC on June 13 and 14. Tickets for this mammoth concert are going on sale May 2 at your local TicketMaster outlets. For more info on this and the whole “Free Tibet” thing, visit www.tibet98.com.

What is this? This year’s Glastonbury Festival seems to have a band by the name of “On A Friday” on the bill. For those of you just joining us, “On A Friday” was the name Radiohead had before signing their record deal. Keep in mind folks, this is just a rumor… don’t get crazy yet.

As reported earlier, Thom is supposedly a guest on Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast to Coast which airs Friday nights at midnight. No date has been announced for the show’s airing, but it is said that the show was taped last Saturday.

Radiohead has been nominated for two Ivor Norvello Awards (the UK’s most important songwritting awards.) Karma Police is nominated for Best Contemporary Song while Paranoid Android is nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

The Airbag/ How am I Driving EP should be available now to everyone. You can read a nice review of it in the L.A. Times by teasing your mouse here.

News for April 18, 1998

What does it take to score an interview with reluctant Brit-rock demigod Thom Yorke of Radiohead? Apparently, being animated doesn’t hurt. The Radiohead frontman has agreed to appear on an upcoming episode of the Cartoon Network talk show “Space Ghost Coast To Coast” which airs each Friday at midnight.

Yorke, who often leaves interview duties to his bandmates, joins an impressive list of music world luminaries who have visited the show, including Metallica, Beck, Method Man, and Pavement, who were the first band to actually perform on the show (excluding Space Ghost’s tuneless sidekick Brak, of course).

Radiohead wraps up its U.S. tour with two shows at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall this weekend.

Action Records is having a contest in which you can win rare Radiohead artwork. The catch: you got to preorder the upcoming Seven Television Commercials home video.

You can read the transcripts from last Sunday’s MuchMusic interview with Thom by clicking here.

You can listen to the KROQ April Fools joke by clicking here. It is in real audio, so you will need to have the appropriate equipment.

Thom will not be naked in the next Drugstore video as previously thought. Here is an excerpt from the fanzine “Tartrazine” in which Drugstore’s Isabel and Darren were interviewed:

t: is it true what i’ve heard about the video for ‘el president’?
isabel: it’s kind of true, but it was done in a really tasteful way….no, it’s not. if you check the paper it was actually april fools day. but we were sent that treatment by a video maker, and we thought it was so preposterous, so ridiculous – the idea of me and thom naked in mud. we showed it to thom and said ‘thom, look!’, and he said ‘oh, let’s send that to the press as a press release’.
t: so it’s not actually true?
isabel: no! oh please!
t: I didn’t really think that thom would go for that kind of thing..
darren: well, you’re the first person that knows – we haven’t told anyone else yet.
isabel: no, we haven’t told anyone. but the video’s beautiful.
t: does it have thom yorke in it?
isabel: yes. it’s beautiful – keep watching MTV because they’ve put it on heavy rotation.

many thanks to emma short

News for April 2, 1998

Boy oh boy! The excitement today! For those of you that don’t know, Thom supposedly got into a fight with a KROQ radio DJ yesterday morning. I guess many people didn’t look at their calendars when they got up. For a complete report on this April Fool’s joke, click here.

Ok, I admit. It had me going for a second.

From the Army of Lovers Headquaters website:

“Tralala Productions are considering [NOTE that I said “considering”, but it is a possibility] taking legal action against the British band Radiohead (on behalf of Army of Lovers and songwriters Alexander Bard, Anders Wollbeck and Jean-Pierre Barda) on grounds of plagiarism. The song “Exit Music (For a Film)” from Radiohead’s critically acclaimed 1997 album OK Computer has a chorus very similar to that of Army of Lovers’ hit “Crucified” from 1991.”

From the L.A. Times:

“Radiohead’s Thom Yorke hasn’t emerged as a sex symbol yet, but he’ll be naked in his next video appearance, bound by heavy ropes to the likewise undressed Isabel Monteiro, singer for the English Band Drugstore. The video is for ‘El President,’ a Yorke-Monteiro duet that will be the first single from Drugstroe’s upcoming album…”

Radiohead has dropped to number 53 in the Billboard 200.

News for March 7, 1998

The collaboration single with Drugstore and Thom will be released on April 20. The track, entitled El Presidente, was recorded in 1996 but is now being released due to legal problems.

A video compilation containing seven singles will be released on April 27 in the UK. It will include videos for Paranoid Android, Street Spirit, No Surprises, Just, High & Dry (US version), Karma Police, and Fake Plastic Trees.

There has been a second date added in New York CIty on March 18. The people of Detroit are petitioning to have radiohead come and play there on their upcoming US tour.

For the tour in America, Radiohead will be releasing a new EP called ‘Airbag: How’s My Driving?’, (referred to by Stanley as the ‘we’re running out of ideas’ EP). No other details at the moment, but lets hope it has a few new tracks – as the band have said that they will be playing new material on the forthcoming tour (Motion Picture Soundtrack and True Love Waits at least).

The DJ Shadow / Thom collaboration, Rabbit in Your Headlights, will be released this summer.
