Radiohead announce new album, you pick the price

in_rainbows.png
Well, well, well. Radiohead, err Jonny more like it, announced that a new Radiohead album will be released on October 10th. Yes, you read it correctly. October 10th. That is next week.

It will be called In Rainbows and the way it will be released is quite interesting. First off, it will only be available on www.inrainbows.com initially.

Secondly, it appears that they are releasing this album without a signed deal with a record company. Of course, many of us have been saying for years that they don’t need EMI or any label.

If you go to the site now, you’ll notice that there are two options for pre-ordering: Discbox and Download.

What is the difference?

Things are picking up in Radioheadland

fifth.jpg
Woah, we’re out of the country for a few weeks and come back to huge Radiohead developments. Go figure.

Anyway, most of you probably know by now that the band have been sending out secret messages on their Dead Air Space blog, dropping hints about the next Radiohead album. Here’s what we know so far (courtesy of At Ease):

September 20: YES WE ARE STILL ALIVE
September 21: BLINK YOUR EYES ONE FOR YES TWO FOR NO CODE CODE CODE
September 22: PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY
September 22: XENDLESS
September 23: MIGHT NOT OPERATE PROPERLY
September 24: A FLATLINE WE ARE IN A MEETING
September 25: CONSIDERING DISSEMINATION
September 25: SEMAPHORE ELEMENTS
September 26: MARCH WAX

Look at the last one from yesterday. MARCH WAX? Could that mean that the new album may be coming out in March? And what does “WAX” mean? Wax Records? Earwax Records? To be released only on vinyl? Too many questions….

As we try to make sense of it, we’ll let you check out these stories:
– NME: Radiohead set to release new album in March?
– Tiny Mix Tapes: Radiohead Foregoes iTunes To Maximize Profits To Stave Off Attacks From The Machine, Man
– NME: Radiohead reveal more album tracklisting clues
– Pitchfork: Radiohead Continue Cryptic Cryptograms, Make LP Site?
– Billboard: Radiohead Selling Full Albums Via 7digital Deal

New Radiohead album on HMV.co.uk

Rumor time! HMV has posted up a prerelease page for Radiohead which we would assume is for the new album. Check it out here. Now this is probably nothing at all but in times of slow news reporting, we’ll take anything.

No mention of a release date yet, though rumor has it that it could be coming in November. We certainly hope it comes sooner.

Now back to what you were doing….

Over your shoulder – Binaural Recording

thom torn off hat.jpg
Maybe you were like us and wondered what that strange mannequin head was doing staring at Thom playing the piano in the April 22 update over at Dead Air Space. Jason M. wrote in to explain what this is and we thought we would pass it on to you.

Have you seen the mannequin head that Radiohead has in the studio?
It’s specifically in the DEAD AIR SPACE photo from Sun, Apr 22nd titled “Over your shoulder…”
It’s actually a rarely used form of recording technology called “Binaural Recording”.
Microphones are built into a fake head made of material that mimics how soundwaves pass through the human body.
The two main openings, the ear canals, create an exact replication of how humans hear the sounds in real life.
Basically, on the new album, you’ll be hearing some of the tracks, mainly piano, as if Thom was playing it in the same room as you.
Should be very interesting.

Here’s the wikipedia article for more information.
