As many of you know, legendary BBC DJ John Peel passed away on October 26 after suffering from a heart attack at the age of 65 while vactioning in Peru. He has been very influential to many, including Thom Yorke, who had this to say:
“Who am I going to listen to now? He’s been my inspiration since I was 14. I’m thinking about you. Thanks John Peel.”
Word has it that if you purchase $15 or more worth of merchandise at the DJ Shadow Store, you will receive a free vinyl copy of Shadow’s “The Gloaming” remix. We reported last week that the mix was rejected by Radiohead label for “sample clearance issues” so this may be your only chance to get it.
Shadow’s site doesn’t come out and say that the free vinyl is in fact the Radiohead remix (probably due to legal reasons), but we have been told that it will be.
“We can’t divulge what it is, but trust us…you’re going to want this one! Not available in any store or on any other site, this is one giveaway that people will be talking about for years to come…but hurry, because supplies are limited.”

Noel Gallagher of Oasis; Coldplay; Damon Albarn of Blur; and the Darkness are among the British pop stars who are to revive the 1980’s ad hoc charity pop group Band Aid and rerecord the 1984 hit song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in time for that holiday. Dido, and the band Travis and Keane have already committed, and Midge Ure of Ultravox, who wrote the hit with Bob Geldof, said he is trying to get Robbie Williams and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to join the group, the BBC reported. Nigel Godrich, Radiohead’s producer, is to record the song, and Mr. Ure said he hoped to convene the session on a Sunday in early November. The original “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” sold 3.5 million copies in Britain to raise money for African famine relief, and it set the stage for the 1985 Live Aid concerts. The song was rerecorded in 1989 by Band Aid II, which included Rick Astley, Luke Goss, Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan. The new group will be called Band Aid III.

As previously reported Radiohead will release the DVD ‘The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time’ (a collection of music from their recent album ‘Hail To The Thief’, as well as unreleased songs described it as a “110-minute excursion into the bizarre”) on December 1.
Now to accompany it the band will be releasing an official 2005 calender, which has just been made available to pre-order from the band’s website www.waste.uk.com.
The calendar (priced at a very reasonable £7.50) is described by the site as “A calendar for 2005 containing phases of the moon and art some of which is as yet unseen. A joy for any lover of calendars and Radiohead.” The site also provides the warning “CONTAINS PHASES OF THE MOON.”
The calendar has been designed is by longtime Radiohead collaborators Stanley Donwood and Dr.Tchock (a.k.a. Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke) and contains many previous unpublished images and pieces of Radiohead artwork.

Solesides.com, the source for all things Quannum (including DJ Shadow) is reporting that Radiohead’s label rejected Shadow’s remix of ‘The Gloaming’ due to “sample clearance issues”. The samples in question seem to be of George W. Bush saying words like “terrorists”, “terrible weapons”, “saddam hussein”, “nuclear holy warriors”, etc. (i.e. his usual speech) over and over again.
Plans were set to press 500 copies on vinyl just a week or so ago, but those have been cancelled as well. You can find a pre-release version that Shadow played on the radio over at your favorite file-sharing program- unfortunately, that version may have just turned into the final one.
I’ll leave it to you to decide whether “sample clearance issues” (their quote) or “political pressure from record label executives who refuse to issue anything bashing Bush” (my quote) was the real cause of this one. Keep in mind that this is currently unconfirmed, but we’ll keep you posted.
