OK Computer Radiohead

News for March 5, 1999

It’s been announced that the Radiohead film/documentary detailing the band on their last tour, will have it’s cinematic release in the U.S. at the annual South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. It will be held at the Austin Convention Center on March 20. After that various large cities around the U.S. will be carrying the film. I know that Chicago’s Music Box Theater will be running it on April 16 and 17 at the midnight showings. It will also be screened in limited engagements in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. If you know these dates, email me.

If you can’t make it to one of the theaters, don’t fret. On May 4 it will be released on video and DVD at your local record and video shop.

OK Computer Radiohead Thom Yorke tour

News for February 28, 1999

There is a rumor floating around that Radiohead might be the supporting act on R.E.M.’s summer tour. More on that as it becomes available.

Another R.E.M./Radiohead project is in the works. R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe recently said in an interview that he and Thom have recorded a duet together. There is no release date or title available yet. Here’s a clip of the interview:

“Yeah, I mean Thom is an amazing singer,” added Stipe. “We know a lot of amazing singers and musicians and any good opportunity to work with them would be welcome. I’m not saying it will happen, I’m saying, speaking for three of us, we would love to work with Thom or any of the guys from Radiohead. We would love to work again with Patti Smith, with any of the guys from Grant Lee Phillips or Bjork or Natalie Merchant.”

You can read the full R.E.M. article by pointing your mouse or trackball here. thanks to Will Campbell

There is a chance that Radiohead might take part again in this year’s Tibetan Freedom Concert. It will be held in four different cities this June. For more info on the concert, or to learn about the whole free Tibet thing, go here.

The tour documentary, Meeting People is Easy, won’t be released until April 20 in the U.S. It is available for purchase in Europe. For those who don’t know about it, here is a quick rundown:

“a bunch of articulate, essentially shy people who, somehow, are able to create this huge, astonishing music and as a result find themselves in the strange/insane/seductive world of end-of-the-century-celebrity with thousands of people wanting to meet them, thousands of cameras and microphones constantly siphoning off little bits of them.” – grant gee, director. he followed the band around and basically filmed there every move while they campaigned for OK COMPUTER. You might know him also as directing the No Surprises video.

More info later.
cheers.

Jonny Greenwood OK Computer Radiohead

News for February 10, 1999

not much new today. can’t wait for that r.e.m. tour! anyway, here’s an article from NME:

JONNY BLOWS IT

RADIOHEAD guitarist Jonny Greenwood has made a guest appearance on the new Pavement album – playing harmonica. The collaboration came about because the album, as-yet untitled and due out in June, is being produced by Nigel Godrich, who produced Radiohead’s 1997 album ‘OK Computer’, as well as last year’s ‘Mutations’ by Beck. When Godrich decided he wanted some harmonica on part of the Pavement album, he asked Greenwood to do it. Pavement’s spokesman said: “I’m sure they’re fans of each other’s. Radiohead have pretty good taste!”

for those of you in america who can’t possibly wait for the april release of ‘Meeting People is Easy’, visit cdeurope.com where, for an extra $15, they’ll transfer the PAL VHS version available in europe to the american format.
cheers!

from NME.com:
As previously reported on NME.com, the documentary was filmed over the past year, with ‘No Surprises’ video director Grant Gee tracking Radiohead as they toured the world in support of ‘OK Computer’. No release date for the movie has been set yet.

Speaking to NME last week, Ed O’Brien said the film was now being edited and that a “low-key” premiere was being planned. He said: “It’s coming on really well. We went down last week and saw some of the rushes. Grant’s got about eight hours’ worth of stuff and it’s got to be condensed, obviously. It’s very honest, but it’s not a rockumentary, that’s the last thing we wanted it to be because that would be so Spinal Tap.”

Ed said the main thrust of the film was to convey the strange life of a rock group on the road, so they gave the director free rein. “I mean, you make a record within the confines of the five of you, and whoever else, then after that, you go out and tour this record and that’s when it gets bizarre, then it’s the rock’n’roll circus thing. It’s not normality and it’s not real. It’s his slant on that and I think it’s going to be quite interesting.”

Ed scotched widespread stories there would be a new Radiohead album before the end of this year, although he admitted that they have been recording in the back of the tourbus while they toured the last album.

He said: “We demoed stuff and things like that. But basically, I think an album has to be recorded over a certain period of time. So we’ll start work on it properly in November.” OK COMPUTER has gone platinum in the US.

The 7 Television Commercials will be released the United States on June 30.

Radiohead picked up two awards at the Ivor Novello Awards last month:
BEST CONTEMPORARY SONG – Karma Police
BEST SONG MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY – Paranoid Android

phil recently said that the band are interested in recording their next album in New Zealand, at a studio in Karekare beach where Crowded House recorded their final album, “Together Alone”. Selway told the New Zealand Press Association during the band’s recent visit, “we’ve been looking at studios to record the next record in, and when we were in Auckland we went out to Karekare to look at one. it’s the same one that Crowded House used. it’s such and amazing place.”
