If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now

newshit.jpg

This summer, the Lazarides Gallery will present an exhibition of brand new art by Stanley Donwood. Known internationally for his work on album and poster art for the band Radiohead, he was the recipient of a prestigious Grammy Award in 2001. His first solo show at the Lazarides Gallery received huge interest from the public, and for his second solo exhibition Donwood has created a series of new etchings and paintings, including Home, illustrated above.

If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now includes a series of ten prints that reflect Donwood’s distraught meditations on the issues that have preoccupied the artist over the past three years including the dislocation and alienation of the individual, the morbid state of society, mass conformity, and the proliferation of war.

The prints are made in a complicated and laborious photogravure etching process, using a printing press more than 150 years old. According to the artist, “Photogravure etching is an almost unbelievably complicated, laborious, involved, lengthy and difficult process. I now look upon my endeavours last year with all that London Views linocutting and printing as pretty much a walk in the fucking park.”

Donwood’s work has been represented in numerous publications worldwide, and he has exhibited in provocative exhibitions such as Dead Children Playing in Barcelona in 2006 and Department of Reclusive Paranoia in Rotterdam earlier this year.

Exhibition Dates: Fri 15th of June – Sat 14th of July

Radiohead news wrap-up

mm Tottenham.jpg

We can come up with a ton of excuses on why nothing has been posted here since last month. Don’t worry, we’ll spare you. A lot of effort has been put in to a redesign of the entire site so it’s not like we’ve totally neglected things.

» So what’s new in the world of Radiohead? Well, as you probably know, the band is back with pal Nigel Godrich recording the new album “properly” now according to Thom. There are plenty of photos of behind the scenes action in the studio over at the band’s blog Dead Air Space. One of the photos (pictured above) is of Stanley painting. He usually bunks up with the band while in the studio and designs all the album artwork while they record. Could this be a hint of the album cover?

» Speaking of Mr. Donwood, there is a new section on his site called “Dead Children Playing.” Nice. There will be an exhibition in Barcelona, Spain from November 26 to December 16 where paintings from Stanley and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) will be displayed. For more information, check out the site.

» Now for something completely different. Radiohead rag dolls.

» Later this month, Thom will be releasing a 5 song / 2 video EP called Spitting Feathers. This looks to be a Japanese release but Amazon has it for pre-sale. Here’s the tracklist:

1. Drunkk Machine
2. A Rat’s Nest
3. Jetstream
4. Harrowdown Hill (Extended Mix)
5. Iluvya
6. Video – Harrowdown Hill
7. Video – Analyse

» Better late then never, right? Thanks to Justin for sending us the Radiohead pumpkin he carved for Halloween.

» So by visiting Green Plastic, it would be assumed that you have an interest in Radiohead. Maybe you have an interest in marching bands as well? Well then, today is your lucky day. The University of Arizona marching band is doing a 15 minute Radiohead medley this year. See for yourself! Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3.

» Jonny Greenwood (Happy belated Birthday btw) is up for BBC Composer of the Year for 2006. You can stream his piece “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” here.

» A lot of people emailed to tell us that Thom’s “Analyse” plays at the end of Christopher Nolan’s new film The Prestige. So now you know.
Ciao!

What’s up with www.theeraser.net?

Thom’s recent posting at DAS about the site www.theeraser.net has made us curious. What is it? Does it have anything to do with Radiohead? Is it a hint about the new album?

GP reader Will pointed out to us that the domain is registered to Chris Hufford, which you may know as Radiohead’s manager. The animation on the site seems to have changed from the original one that was seen yesterday. That can be viewed here.
(thanks to Will)

UPDATE: It’s possible that this site has something to do with Stanley Donwood’s new series of drawings called “London Views”. GP reader Chris writes:

The London-buildings-on-fire etc. thing is from a series of Stanley Donwood drawings called “London Views”, as mentioned in the Slowly Downward Taglibro. “At the time of writing my plan is to maßively enlarge these apocalyptic scenarios, & then cage them, much as the daily headlines for London’s Evening Standard are caged with a diamond lattice of galvanised wire.

“They will be on display from the 19th of May 2006 in a former emporium of sado-masochistic paraphenalia at 8 Greek Street, Soho, London; next-door to a pub called The Pillars of Hercules.”

Update again: Thom has announced that he will be releasing an album called “The Eraser”. Mystery solved! More info…

Buy Stanley’s Stuff

Got some money just sitting around? Well then, why don’t you go to Stanley Donwood’s site and check out his new shop. In addition to his books, you can buy limited edition prints that are all hand-printed, signed, and numbered. They will set you back some dough, though.

Stanley also says that more things are in the works like additional prints, a spoken-word CD, and something “extremely weird”. We reported a few weeks ago that Stan has something up his sleeve and can’t wait to see what it is!
